Our local community is very important to the academy. Below are some examples of the events that we have participated in to the support the community and its residents.
On the 28th November students from year 9 took part in The Big Sleepout. Run by St Basils, The Big Sleepout is a charity event that provides help for homeless children. 14 students undertook the task of sleeping rough for the night with just a cardboard box and a plastic bag to protect them from the elements. The evening went well, until the weather turned against them with persistent rain destroying the overnight homes the students made constructed. Not to be deterred, our students showed true Shelfield spirit by carrying on and making the most of the experience. Well Done Form 9NW!
At the event students also met Brad Simpson, the lead vocalist for the pop boy-band The Vamps.
On Tuesday 16th December the Academy invited more than 70 senior members of our local community for a Christmas Community Themed day.
The day began with a greeting by our Principal Miss Ward and Miss Eaton, Community Links and Enrichment Co-ordinator. They were then escorted by students to a musical and
theatrical performance provided by our music and drama department. This was filled with beautiful Christmas music, singing and acting by the students within the Drama Academy, band and Singing Academy.
Guests received a Christmas meal, pudding, mince pies and coffee prepared on site by our catering team. Dinner was served by members of our Duke of Edinburgh Students, with some using this towards the volunteer section of their award. The event received extremely positive comments including “could I hire them for Christmas Dinner”!
