A high priority is given to advising students about the options open to them when they move on from our Sixth Form. We are proud of the links that we have forged with local employers and higher education establishments throughout the country as well as locally. Students have access to a Careers Adviser and Sixth Form staff whom they can arrange an interview with enabling them to make well-researched decisions about their future.

Students have access to up-to-date, comprehensive online information about careers, further and higher education, employment, training programmes, work experience and gap year opportunities. Guest speakers from a variety of professions and occupations regularly come into the academy, inspiring students to explore potential career paths.

Students are provided with opportunities to hear from providers of post -18 options at, and leading up to important transition points. Higher education, Further Education institutes and work based training providers deliver assembly presentations, one to one advice and are fully represented at our careers fair to offer CIAG on the courses and options available post-18.  

This impartial advice and guidance provided by both the academy and through collaboration enables students to make informed choices on the most appropriate progression route.

One to One Careers Advice and Guidance

Students and their parents have the option to book a careers meeting with the academy’s Careers Adviser in school for impartial careers information, advice and guidance. Students can also access a drop-in service at the Careers Office during break-time and after school.

Students have continual access to personalised Information, Advice and Guidance from the Sixth Form team to support their Post-18 transition, e.g. specialised practice interviews and applying for university and student finance.

 

Work Experience

Bespoke work experience programme, students are supported to find work experience placements in Year 12 and take one week of work experience with an employer.  They complete log-books whilst on placement and receive a certificate on completion of the programme. To identify potential placements students will gain additional support, during the Spring Term, from the Education Business Partnership.

 

Ways Forward After 18

‘Ways Forward after 18 Day’ is a collaboration between the academy and several professional organisations, the programme incorporates a mock interview with a local business representative and feedback.  

 

Employability Skills Programme

In Year 12 students take part in an Employability Skills Programme delivered by the Business Studies Department and in collaboration with employers, which teaches skills required in the workplace, this year’s programme included:

Day 1 - Lloyd’s Bank and the Business Studies Department presented workshops on “Creating a CV”, “Completing an Application Form”, “Developing Interview Skills” and “Preparing your Documentation”. Students then applied for their chosen job and created a CV with staff support.

Day 2 - One to one CV mentoring with Lloyd’s Bank employees and the Business Studies Department – each student had a 20 minute appointment and then supported access to ICT facilities to act on the advice given.

Day 3 - Mock interviews with a member of the local business community (36 participants). Organised in conjunction with Walsall Education Business Partnership and Lloyd’s Bank. Also on day 3 a series of post 18 workshops ran including: Life at University/Life as an entrepreneur/Higher and degree level apprenticeships.

 

Inspirational Speakers Programme

Inspirational speaker’s week with various industry sector representatives delivering careers and industry talks for students. This included the following sector representatives:

Sport, teaching, banking and finance, marketing, ICT, healthcare, psychology, journalism and HR.

Aspire to HE

Students with the potential to enter higher education are mentored through the Aspire to HE project, a partnership funded through the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) and led by The University of Wolverhampton.

The Year 12 and 13 Aspire to HE programme includes ‘Positively MAD’ Student Workshops and Exam Busters delivered by The UK’s leading provider of outstanding workshops, Positively MAD and The University of Wolverhampton.

Robert Hunt Chief Corporate Officer Veolia UK – presented his career journey to Business students in Years 12 and 13.

David Dein Former Chairman of the Football Association and Arsenal Football Club – presented his career journey to Football academy and BTEC sport students in Years 12 and 13.

 

Careers Fair

The opportunity to attend the annual Careers Fair event at the academy, which allows students to talk to a range of employers and universities about post-18 options for the immediate future including advanced, higher and degree apprenticeships, school leaver programmes and training opportunities.

The Higher Education and Apprenticeship Convention

Students attend the Higher Education and Apprenticeship convention organised by UCAS – this is a national event in Birmingham and commences applications to Higher Education. There is also on-going support from Higher Education Outreach for students whilst in sixth form.

 

The Sutton Trust Summer Schools Programme

All Students commence the Causeway Education, Access Champions Programme in conjunction with the Sutton Trust. This is a two-year programme with the aim to improve progression rates to competitive Higher Education courses and institutions. Students have access to an online tool to support them through all aspects of the application process and provide personalised advice and guidance.

Students complete applications for The Sutton Trust Summer Schools Programme, this enables students to develop their academic skills and confidence whilst experiencing the university environment. Participating students will continue to be supported after completing the programme until the end of their studies by a mentor.
