The curriculum at Shelfeld Community Academy aims to offer all students a broad, balanced and engaging educational experience. All students will follow a personalised curriculum pathway that is supportive of their needs, but also provides diversity and challenge in order to give them the best opportunity to fulfil their potential and develop interests and experiences in new subject areas. In years 7 and 8, all students follow a core curriculum that prepares students for success in the English Baccalaureate subjects and comprises of:
- Modern Languages
Students will also have the opportunity to study arrange of other subjects, including Technology, Art, Drama and Music. In years 9 to 11, students will take personalised option pathways that, in addition to following the English Baccalaureate, gives the opportunity to follow a broad range of GCSE and Vocational qualifications. Departments carefully plan their curriculum to support the progress of students of all abilities from year 7 to 13. Progress is supported by high expectations of attitudes to learning, focused homework tasks and regular assessments, with intervention provided for students that need additional support. We also value highly the role of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education and the wider curriculum in supporting the social, cultural and moral development of all students, to help them become confident, mature and responsible young people.
A wide range of curricular and extra-curricular support is provided to students who need additional help with developing literacy and numeracy skills, skills essential in becoming independent and confident learners.
Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child’s education and are regularly kept informed of progress and additional learning opportunities that are available.
