Ormiston Shefield Academy EcoSchools
EcoSchools report by Michaela Y, Year 9
Since June 2021, the academy re-started its EcoSchools group. The EcoSchools group is made up of students representing each form group in Year 7 to Year 9.
EcoSchools is an international programme, run in the UK by Keep Britain Tidy. There are three levels of award: bronze, silver and green flag. As part of the EcoSchools Award there are 7 areas to focus on: Biodiversity, Energy, Global Citizenship, Healthy Living, Litter, Marine, School Grounds, Transport, Waste, Water. We achieved bronze in 2020 by setting up EcoSchools and displaying our information, as well as working on litter and recycling projects. We are currently aiming for silver award this year with a focus on Biodiversity.
In the Summer Term, we met to survey the biodiversity of the school site using the PlantNet App (see images), we reviewed our progress from bronze and we choose our foci this academic year.
Between September and December, the EcoSchools group will be completing the following activities:
- 20th September 2021 in G8 – EcoSchools Action Plan and Map of School Biodiversity.
- 4th October 2021 in G8 – Preparation for planting outside
- 18th October 2021 in G8 – Competition to designing a wildlife garden with Cath Shellswell from Plant Life.
- 22nd November 2021 in G8 – Planting for next year, making bird boxes and hotels
As we improve the school site’s biodiversity over time we will achieve EcoSchools Silver Award. If you, your parents, or local groups would like to be involved please see your form EcoSchools Rep, the EcoSchools display board in Orange, or one of the staff involved: Miss Dixon, Mrs Mayo-Hollaway, Mr Nellist, Mr Roberts.
