The academy are delighted after its latest Ofsted inspection rated the academy as good on all fronts, including achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils and sixth form provision.
Following a two-day visit in May, inspectors commented on the ‘positive and supportive climate for learning’ throughout the academy and commended the ‘visionary’ leadership provided by the principal and senior vice principal, which has ‘transformed’ the academy.
The report went on to describe the full leadership team as “brave, determined and successful in raising achievement and improving teaching.”
The report noted that the academy is additionally well supported at a high level: “The sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), its Progress and Interim Executive Boards and leaders at all levels are securing significant improvements to students’ achievement and teachers’ performance.”
Student comments also featured in the report, which quoted: “‘We respect others, even if they hold different views, have particular needs to help them or live differently to ourselves,’ stated one very mature and responsible Key Stage 4 pupil.”
Another student is quoted as saying: “This is a great school, the staff have turned my life around.”
Principal Paula Ward said: “We are delighted with this report. The achievements of our students are incredibly important to us, and this has been reflected in the feedback we’ve received. Students are well cared for here, with excellent access to a variety of extra-curricular activities, and achievement is steadily rising.
“We have very high expectations for students and staff and this report shows how wonderfully they have responded to this. We aim to turn around many more of our students’ lives on our journey to outstanding.”
Professor Toby Salt, CEO of the academy’ sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust added: “I am pleased Ofsted has recognised the leadership and support from OAT, and it has rightly highlighted the strong leadership in place at Shelfield, which is having a very positive effect on the education it offers young people in Pelsall.
“The academy provides an inspiring learning environment for its students, and it is moving forward with purpose and determination.”
