Governance

 

The Governing Body

The Governing Body is made up of 9 members, plus the Principal.  We have one parent and one staff elected Governor with the remainder appointed by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) or the LGB.
Our committees currently consist of the full Local Governing Body (LGB), Curriculum and Standards Committee (C&S) and a Finance and General Purposes Committee (FGP).

What are Governing Bodies For?

Governors are the largest volunteer force in the country and their overall purpose is to help schools and academies raise standards and provide the best possible education for their students.
The Governing Body does not manage Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy but it does give direction and focus by providing strategic leadership.

 

What are the roles of the Governing Body?

To challenge and support the Principal.
To oversee the academy’s long-term vision, strategic aims, values and ethos.
To carry out statutory responsibilities, such as safeguarding.
To agree and monitor plans and policies.
To make creative use of available resources.
To monitor and evaluate performance.
To be involved in the appointment of the Principal.
To ensure proper financial management of the academy.
To communicate openly with parents, staff and the local community.

 

How does the Governing Body Work?

The Governing Body works as a group, taking collective responsibility for all decisions. Governors work in close partnership with the Principal who, as the lead professional, advises and assists the Governing Body to carry out its functions.
The Governing Body includes people with a wide range of skills, experience and backgrounds, all of whom have equal status and rights as Governors. Governors are encouraged to broaden and develop their skills, knowledge and confidence through engaging in training opportunities.
Each governing committee meets once each term to discuss key areas such as student performance, the curriculum, staffing, finance, premises and health and safety. It is important for Governors to get to know the academy and its staff, which they do by regularly visiting and attending academy events and open days whenever possible.  Governors take on specific roles linked to aspects of the academy’s development plan and with members of the Senior Leadership Team.

 

Becoming a Parent Governor

Becoming a Parent Governor can be very rewarding and offers the opportunity to make a real contribution to the life and work of our academy. Governors play a key role in the leadership of the academy and work together with the Principal, staff and other governors to ensure that our academy provides a challenging and supportive environment for its students. Parent Governor vacancies are advertised on our website and circulated to all parents of current students via letter.

 

Becoming an OAT Governor

Becoming an Ormiston Academies Trust governor is challenging, interesting and deeply rewarding and contributes to the well-being and prospects of students, academies and communities. OAT welcomes applications from people from all walks of life to gain a wide variety of skills and experience to support and develop the academy.

Mr Peter Crowe –  appointed January 2017

I have spent my whole career in the world of education – since 2000, 14 years as headteacher (and 4 as an executive headteacher of 2 Schools) in Derbyshire.  Since retiring 'from the coalface' as it were, I've worked as a development coach for a national middle leaders training programme for middle leaders aspiring to excellence across the Midlands region and as a Branch Secretary for the Association of School and College leaders.  I have been involved with Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy as an Educational Advisor since November 2015 and I look forward to working with the other governors and senior staff of the academy under the leadership of Mr Turnbull as the academy and its community rises to the many and varied challenges ahead on its journey to excellence.

A lawyer and Chartered Secretary by profession, I have over 25 years’ experience of governance in education and charities.  As a Walsall resident I was really pleased to join the Local Governing Body of Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy and contribute to the strong leadership and management that is key to the success of the academy’s teaching and learning.  I am really impressed by the community spirit of the students, staff and parents at Shelfield and their determination to make the school the best it can be for the benefit of ALL.  I feel privileged to be able to contribute to the academy’s successes in the years to come.

Mrs Helen Dudson – appointed June 2015 (LGB – C&S)
Parent Governor
 
I have been involved with the academy since my eldest son joined in 2013, initially as a member of the Parent Forum and then by joining the Governing Body as soon as it was re-established in 2015. I have a background in public sector and work across a number of disciplines including performance, communications, complaints and information governance. I have also managed organisational inspections and Ofsted Inspections of social services and partnership arrangements so have an understanding of the inspection regimes used nationally. I am a passionate believer that every child, regardless of academic ability, should have the opportunity to shine and develop to their full potential and this is why I became involved with Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy, hoping to utilise my skills and knowledge to support the school and where appropriate challenge the school to ensure all pupils have the right support at the right time to help them surpass their expectations.

Staff Governor
 
I have been employed as a teacher for over 15 years, initially working in further education within Walsall, followed by my position within our academy.  I hope that my past experience as a governor in the primary and secondary sector will provide the knowledge and understanding needed on the governing body at Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy. I have leadership experience and over 10 years’ experience with the exam board Pearsons as an examiner, enabling me to familiarise myself with staff and understand the needs of students. Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy has provided my three daughters with a great education, enabling them to progress to University. I feel privileged to contribute to the future success of our growing academy and feel proud to be part of the academy family.

I am very pleased to be a Governor for Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy. My day job is HR Business Partner for Marston’s – and my career has spanned the world of retail and hospitality – running Pubs and Restaurants and then as a senior leader moving to support these businesses in HR and Training – to that end I have been a learning and development professional for nearly ten years. I am hoping to bring my experience to the governing body and to get very involved in helping the academy establish links with business and enrichment opportunities for the student population. I am also keen to support the development of the excellent team at Shelfield.

I have been involved within education across all sectors (Secondary, Primary and Special) as a classroom practitioner as well as a Senior Leader. During my 10 years in education I have been heavily involved in raising standards of education within my host school and through an outreach model as an Advanced Skills Teacher and more recently as a consultant. I am passionate about providing opportunities for all to showcase their capabilities and excel in their chosen domain.  I am currently the Deputy Headteacher at Elmwood School an 11-16 Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) provision within Walsall and a Seconded Leader to the Local Authority as a strategic member of the SEND / School Improvement Team.

I am an HR professional with over 20 years’ experience within a variety of environments including Retail and Education. I have worked for LA schools and Academy chains. I have been fortunate enough to work onsite within 2 schools and have developed a good understanding of the key challenges schools today face. I am currently HRBP for Ormiston Academies Trust, based at the Head Office in Birmingham and joined in November 2014.
