'Good' Ofsted rating completes impressive turnaround for Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy

We have completed an impressive turnaround in fortunes after improving our Ofsted rating from inadequate to good.

In all areas examined – overall effectiveness, leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, quality of teaching, achievement of pupils and sixth form provision.

Lead inspector Charalambos Loizou said: "This is a good school. Standards are rising well and are now in line with the national average by the end of Key Stage Four. Since the last full inspection in January 2014 the principal, senior vice-principal and leadership teams have been brave, determined and successful in raising achievement and improving teaching.

"Most students of all abilities across the academy achieve well. The staff team and leaders at all levels pull together to uphold the academy's high expectations. Leaders, teachers, guidance managers and support staff are improving students' achievement and personal development.

"Students are well behaved, punctual and attentive in lessons. They show courtesy and respect for other students and staff, persevere with their learning and feel safe. There is a positive and supportive climate for learning throughout the academy."

Everyone at the academy are understandably delighted with the recognised improvements.

Principal Paula Ward said: "We are delighted with this report. The achievements of our students are incredibly important to us, and this has been reflected in the feedback we've received. Students are well cared for here, with excellent access to a variety of extra-curricular activities, and achievement is steadily rising.

"We have very high expectations for students and staff and this report shows how wonderfully they have responded to this. We aim to turn around many more of our students' lives on our journey to outstanding."

Professor Toby Salt, CEO of the academy's sponsor Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) added: "I am pleased Ofsted has recognised the leadership and support from OAT, and it has rightly highlighted the strong leadership in place at Shelfield, which is having a very positive effect on the education it offers young people in Pelsall.

"The academy provides an inspiring learning environment for its students, and it is moving forward with purpose and determination."
